Wickhambrook Horticultural Society Reports

september 2009

Unfortunately, the speaker for our September meeting, Mr Mason, was unable to come to give us his talk on “Dahlias”. Dorothy Lightley, who arranges the speakers for our monthly meetings, was given very little notice and spent most of the Monday afternoon trying to book another speaker. After contacting around half a dozen without success, Mr Peter Beale, who has visited us twice before, agreed to come to do his talk entitled “Light amongst the Trees, Part 3).

We do not have meetings in July and August, so it was great to have a good turnout for this one and, although a few people were disappointed not to have the talk about dahlias, Mr Beale’s talk and slide show were much enjoyed. Mr Beale has previously worked for the Forestry Commission and in conservation and he had some lovely slides of birds and butterflies, some of which need special plants and habitats for them to breed and survive. Mr Beale certainly has a huge amount of patience to get such lovely pictures and he was warmly thanked by Stan Bates, first for coming at such short notice, and secondly for giving us such a good talk.

We have two meetings in November – the first our AGM on Friday. 13th November (followed by cheese and wine) and then on Monday, 23rd November a talk by Guy Barker entitled “Winter Floral Display”.

The last meeting of the year is our “Grand Quiz” on Monday, 7th December. The winner will receive the Flora Cup and there are lots of other prizes too, so do come along and try out your gardening knowledge.
