Wickhambrook Horticultural Society Reports

February 2013

Our first monthly meeting of 2013 did not take place until 25th February - the January meeting had had to be cancelled due to the snow and ice. Let us hope that the extremely cold weather that we are still experiencing at the time of writing soon changes into warm Spring weather, when it becomes a pleasure to be outside in the garden!! At least the snowdrops and aconites are showing us that Spring cannot be too far away and it wont be many days now before the daffodils begin to put on a splendid show. So, lots to look forward to in the gardening year.

Mr Tim Freathy, one of the owners of the Depden Farm Shop had come to give us a talk about "Planning your Polytunnel". Tim is an extremely keen, knowledgeable gardener and he brought along slides to illustrate his talk. He gave us lots of advice and was very enthusiastic about his subject. His polytonal gardening is certainly very successful but he did tell us one or two stories about things that had gone wrong. An interesting, enjoyable talk.

On the 25th March we have a talk by Stephen Poyser on "Beekeeping and the Gardener" and on the 22nd April "The Perennial Mr Potter", portrayed by Bryan Thurlow of Clare. All our talks are in the W.I. Hall and begin at 7.30. New Members are very welcome.

We are visiting Scotsdales again on Friday the 5th April for both shopping and to have lunch there. Maria is organising this and if members who are not able to attend the next meeting but would like to go would like more details of the menu, etc then please contact Maria on 01440 820222 or Jackie on 01440 820108. The cost of the meal is £15.50. Lifts can be arranged if necessary. Again we are going to be able to claim a 10% discount on our shopping.

A coach trip to Green Island Gardens and Hyde Hall Gardens is also being planned for Wednesday 12th June. The inclusive cost is £20 and if you are interested please contact Diane on 01638 500169 or Jackie as above.
