Village Notices

Bury Road playground
The small playground on Bury Road in the Clopton area has been the responsibility of Havebury Housing. Havebury does not have the expertise within the organisation to check and maintain the play equipment on a regular basis and have suggested that the small fenced area be gifted to the Parish Council.

New equipment, swings, a rocker cum see saw and safety tiling, has been installed and a RoSPA certificate has been issued. The handover will take place in the near future.

We need someone who lives locally to inspect the area on a regular basis, say once a week, and note if there is anything of concern. If that person is willing to give a verbal report at the Estates Meeting, held on a Tuesday every second month, so much the better. The next meetings are on 10th April and 12th June. Monthly playground inspections will be carried out by Borough staff and an annual visit will be made by an independent professional. Any volunteers? Please contact the Parish Clerk on 01440 821861 if you are willing to give it a try.

Current Report - March/April Scene 2012

Annual Parish Meeting

This year's Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Thursday 15th March at 7.30 pm in the MSC Pavilion. This is not a parish council meeting but a village meeting where everyone contributes including representatives from the parish council. We hope to have reports from the Borough and County Councillors and the Police. The Parish Council chairman will summarise the activities of the council over the past twelve months and the Clerk will give an explanation of the money spent. The Alf Hicks Crystal Biscuit Barrel will be awarded to a person who has given outstanding service to the village in the past year. The proceedings should be complete by 9.00pm. Everyone is welcome. Questions and comments are encouraged or just come along and find out more.

Precept for next year

The Parish Council came in for criticism last year for increasing their portion of the Council Tax. The extra money was needed for parish council elections (would have cost £1,750 had they been required), repairs to notice boards, and refurbishment of the children's playground. There is no need to put aside money for elections in the next twelve months (they take place every fourth year) but there is a need for the trees in the village to be inspected by an arboriculturalist and some remedial action to be carried out. Costs are likely to be in the region of £2,000.

Expenditure for 2012/13 remains much the same for all the main headings, Administration, Services, Estates, Donations, Grants and Earmarked Funds. There will be an increase in the insurance premium to cover the acquisition of Bury Road playground and the results of the tree inspection may also have an effect but all other expenditure should be much the same as in 2011/12. This means that there should be no increase in the Parish Council portion of the precept in the Council Tax Bill we are all about to receive. If you would like more information come along to the Annual Parish meeting (see above) where a full explanation of expenditure over the twelve months will be available.

Clothes recycling bin

You may have noticed a large bin of a lively green colour in the MSC car park. This is for the recycling of clothes, materials and shoes, and is there on a trial basis. As with the glass and paper banks the money received will be used by the MSC for maintenance and repairs to the Hall.

A Jubilee Celebration after all?

We have been offered the gardens of Giffords Hall as a venue for a Jubilee event on Monday 4th June – too good an opportunity to miss. Village organisations will now be contacted to see if and how they wish to be involved. Ideas for activities on the day will be welcome.

More Houses in Wickhambrook?

The next move on the Local Development Framework proposals will be a drop in session to be held in the MSC Hall on 21st March between 4 – 7pm. Planning Officers from the Borough of St Edmundsbury will be present with a set of proposals for a number of houses to be built between now and 2031 and suggestions as to where they should be built. Everyone is invited to see what is being suggested and to make comments. There will be alternative dates at other local venues but they will not be as focused on Wickhambrook.
