A Note from your clerk – Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) for dog walkers

3rd August 2023 | District County Council

West Suffolk Council has Public Space Protection Orders in place in the district which affect Dog Walkers. There are currently no areas in the parish for which dogs are excluded, although it is good practice not to take dogs into children’s play areas, the skate park and multi-use games area.

The PSPO which affects dog walkers throughout the district relates to Dog Fouling.

If you are in charge of dog then you must immediately clear up if it fouls in any area open to the public in West Suffolk. This is a legal requirement which was introduced on 1 October 2017 as all public spaces within West Suffolk became subject to a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). Allowing a dog to foul in an area open to the public without picking it up could result in a Fixed Penalty Notice of £80. If you do not pay the Fixed Penalty Notice then you could be taken to court and fined up to £1,000.

Wickhambrook Parish Council supports its residents to comply with this by providing dog waste bags (free of charge) at the main recreation ground at Cemetery Road.  Please help other residents to enjoy our open spaces by ensuring you clean up after to your dog(s).
