History Society AGM 2021

1st September 2021 | Local History Society

The society held its AGM this month, 18 months late because of the pandemic. The Chairman, Dorothy Anderson, welcomed the members and all office bearers and committee members were re-elected to serve for another year. Stephen Coe and Sue Britnell had resigned from the committee and were thanked for their hard work over the years.

Leslie Hanbury, the President of the Society since 1986, died in the summer of 2020 and the Chairman read an account of his life by his daughters which raised a few smiles as we remembered him fondly.

Gillian Cooper the secretary and Dorothy Anderson then spoke on the United Reformed Church which closed recently and has now been bought with a view to it becoming a house. Dissenting worship has been a feature of life in the village since the reformation. The church was built in 1734, worship having taken place in a barn at Badmondisfield Hall prior to this.

Dorothy also showed a collection of memorabilia from the URC including Bibles, photographs and Sunday School Certificates.

We hope to continue now with our much amended programme and meetings. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 21st September at 7.30pm in the WI Hall when Neil Catchpole will talk on Tales and Songs from the Countryside.
