As usual the May Meeting of the WI takes the form of the AGM. This involves a recap on the year’s activities plus reports from the various groups which run throughout the the year. This includes two walking groups, two reading groups and a newly formed craft group meeting on a Saturday morning. We also had the Secretary’s report and a roundup from the President. The committee was voted back on en bloc as everyone was willing to stand again and retain the same jobs.
The main business of the monthly meeting was to discuss and vote on the two resolutions which will go forward to the AGM in Bournemouth. The first resolution related to the decline of public transport in rural areas and the effects this has on village life. The second concerned raising awareness of cervical cancer screening as the uptake for this procedure appears to be falling. Both resolutions were voted through almost unanimously.
After the business a more light-hearted activity was deemed necessary and this took the form of a “Blind Auction”. There was much hilarity when the member in charge asked if everyone had their blindfolds ready! It then transpired that the participants were not to be blindfolded rather that the items in the auction were “blind”, ie wrapped up hidden from sight! Members had donated various items to be auctioned off and there followed some brisk competition to bid for various packages. Items purchased ranged from gardening gloves, tins of beans, shopping bags to Turkish Delight and a room diffuser. The President was horrified to discover she had bid for an inflatable Zimmer frame and demanded a refund! All in all it was a fun way to round off a serious evening of WI business.
