Wickhambrook WI members Meeting August 2024

19th August 2024 | Wickhambrook W.I.

Once a year the WI committee take a back seat and the members take over! We never quite know what to expect but this year the members did not disappoint.

An evening of folk music and country dancing had been organised for our entertainment. Folk Band “The Idle Kelpies” played a variety of Scottish and Irish folk tunes for half an hour. Len, on the bodrhán or Irish drum, Penni, on guitar and Jean who plays the flute and the whistle soon had us tapping our feet along to the lively tunes.

We were then invited to take part in some folk dancing under the guidance of Ella Hollins, one of our members. After one or two false starts we managed to get the hang of a large circle dance and whooped and hollered around the WI hall. We then mastered a dance in sets of eight where we had to remember whether we were a man or a lady. This did manage to lead to some confusion but we all enjoyed ourselves.

After thirty minutes of gay abandon we needed a rest and were treated to a further set of tunes from “The Idle Kelpies” ending with a singalong to “The Skye Boat Song”. The members had provided delicious homemade cakes for refreshments and these were served with tea and coffee.

Everyone agreed it had been a lively and entertaining evening.
